Client: Institute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Columbia University
A New Identity and New Digital Space for a Columbia University Institute
About The Client
From the website: “The Institute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality is the locus of interdisciplinary feminist and queer scholarship and teaching at Columbia University. Offering an undergraduate degree program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and graduate certification in Feminist Scholarship, the Institute draws its core and affiliated faculty from many disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and from Columbia’s many schools. IRWGS provides rigorous training in interdisciplinary scholarly, pedagogical, and activist practice and prepares undergraduate students for professional work or advanced academic study.”
We were contacted by IRWGS after they worked with several designers to update their branding and website. Unfortunately, none of the designers they utilized were able to bring their vision to life. We spent significant time designing and perfecting the new IRWGS logo, and even more time honing the design for the website. The new branding and website needed to adhere to Columbia University branding standards, therefore this was a challenging, yet fulfilling project.
Positioning & Analysis
The Logo was inspired by the open and ever-shifting narratives around womanhood, gender, and sexuality. IRWGS provides a contained, yet movable space to learn, interrogate, and build.
IRWGS produces a significant amount of print paraphernalia, especially fliers for their full calendar of events. We created various logo treatments to give them design options for different media and backgrounds. Additionally, if the logo is used on non-Columbia mediums, it is customary to include the official Columbia University logo.
